Like most people, I travelled to Peru because I wanted to check out Machu Picchu (click here to read the full blog). I didn’t really know what to expect, but my cousin had already booked a trip so I piggy-backed his plan. I had friends that backpacked up the north-west coast of Peru for a week-long surf camp and they loved it, however I think it’s safe to say that the #1 attraction in Peru is Machu Picchu.
If you want to see Machu Picchu in Peru, make sure you get there via the Inca Trail Hike!

Posted by travel notes | September 23, 2010, 6:42 pmthanks! most people only publish images of machu picchu itself but i’ve posted a lot of pictures of the inca trail hike (which i think is equally as cool) on my flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kellygrainger/sets/. you’ll probably like those too
Posted by kellygrainger | January 22, 2011, 8:47 pmi heard they were going to shut down the inca trail and no longer let tourists hike the inca trail. is that true?
Posted by kaileyandrobb | March 18, 2012, 5:32 pmI think that is complete BS, because I heard the same thing years ago! I was told that the number of tourists and hikers to Machu Picchu per year were ruining the trail and it was being beaten to a pulp. If it were true, it would have shut down by now. I know for a fact that they LIMIT the number of people allowed on the Inca Trail every day, but they certainly have not (and don’t plan to) shut it down. Since it’d be devastating to Peru’s economy, I think Peru Travel and Tourism is just being crafty spreading rumors
