On a Venice to Istanbul cruise, one of our stops was Dubrovnik, Croatia.  There was nowhere to “dock” the ship so we had to offload onto little boats a ways out and motor in.  Dubrovnik is a sweet city surrounded by a massive wall – 2km long if I remember correctly and you can walk all along the top of it.  To be honest we couldn’t find the path or entrance to the top of the wall – we got lost a few times trying to find it and eventually gave up.  It was funny though because at times we were near right in the backyard of residents and they didn’t seem to care at all.   The Old Town is a popular tourist area, lots to do and see by foot – you could easily spend a day just cruising around the cobblestone streets and taking in the sights.  You can still see a lot of mortar damage in the buildings from the Croatian war in the 90′s, but for the most part everything is restored and looks awesome.

Dubrovnik’s Old Town is like Venice – no cars – it’s pedestrian-only which I think makes you feel like you’re in a place miles and years away from any other.  My only regret about Dubrovnik was that we didn’t get a chance to spend the night.  It’s a pretty remote place, being at the very southern tip of Croatia, so I assume most visitors come by Cruise ship on day trips.

Our cruise, by the way, was abosolutely oustanding.  We cruised with Costa on the “Costa Serena” and it was one of the best experiences of my life.  Everything from the ship, food, staff, rooms and entertainment was just near 100% perfection.

  1. Dubrovnik is must visit in Croatia, it is good advice to visiti it during autumn or winter when there is no many people there.
